Amerindian Guyana
This 16-day journey introduces you to the rich culture and pristine environment of Guyana. Harpy Eagle & Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock
Venture into the wild, pristine and little known interior of Guyana for a birdwatchers dream. With over 800 avian species found here, this land is full of birding opportunities. This expedition targets two of Guyana’s best known specialties, the Harpy eagle (Harpy harpyja) and Guianan Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola rupicola). The Harpy Eagle or “flying wolf” is one of the largest eagles in the world. While it's relatively slow reproductive cycle and Amazonian deforestation has placed this species on the IUCN Endangered species list, the eagle still has a refuge in Guyana and our guides continuously monitor at least one accessible active nest at any given time of year. Several Cock-of-the-rock leks lie along on our itinerary so our chances of spotting at least one are excellent. Especially lucky visitors may witness their noisy and exuberant mating rituals.
