Suriname Lodges – Awarradam

Awarradam, Suriname

Awarradam

Make┬ácontact with Suriname’s wild and remote interior as well as the Saramakkan Maroon civilization

Idyllically situated on the Gran Rio river, you can opt for excitement, adventure, or pure relaxation

Awarradam Jungle Lodge & Spa was built by local villagers from nearby Kajana. The small idyllic island, hidden in the Amazon rainforest at the foot of the Awarradam rapids, lies half and hour by boat from the nearest Saramakkan village. These descendants from Dutch slaves fled from coastal plantations in the late 19th century and managed to establish living communities in the Amazon rainforest while preserving their African heritage to a remarkable degree.

These historic facts make Awarradam an ideal place to visit, not only for nature lovers but also for those who wish to learn more about the West African culture as it has remained in Suriname. An unforgettable experience during this tour is a boat trip by night, under the endless starry sky, which will take you to the nearby village Kosindo for an authentic cultural evening of singing and dancing. This tour is recommended for all those who wish to enjoy the pristine Rainforest and learn more about the culture of the Saramakkans

Getting Here

Getting to Awarradam is half the fun! You’ll depart Paramaribo’s tiny Zorg en Hoop aerodrome aboard a small but safe single- or twin-engine aircraft, flying for a little over an hour above the fog-shrouded rainforest. Your seasoned pilot will bank and bring your plane to a safe stop on a sloping grass airstrip carved out of the jungle across the river from Kajana (Kai-Yah-Nah) village. Here, you will be met by Aawarradam staff who will escort you along the remaining distance of the runway to the river where a traditional Saramakkan canoe awaits you and your fellow travellers. Now you’re on the Gran Rio for 20-40 minutes headed to Awarradam island. Most trips arrive on Friday and depart on Monday, or arrive on Monday and depart on Friday. However, you and your group may opt to charter a flight to or from Kajana on any day of the week you choose.

I really fell for this place. It is such a tranquil and natural setting. The cabins are quite basic but they are large, clean and comfortable. We had a large double bed with netting although when we were there in October we never got bit – but others did. Each cabin faces the river with a raised covered deck complete with chairs/table and two hammocks. We spent a lot of time on that deck just gazing at the jungle, the birds, Maroon ladies and kids bathing in the river and dugout canoe river traffic. There are rapids nearby which we enjoyed for a cooling dip.

After an one hour flight and a 30 minutes boattrip we reached this beautiful place in the rainforest. We stayed there for four nights on an island in the middle of the river in a nice wooden cabin with an amazing view on the river and hammocks on the terrace. There was only one other couple. We were very well looked after (safety first!), fantastic food, especially the ‘pom’, we made wonderful guided trips in the jungle, went to marron villages by boat and had swims in the river. Highly recommended!
