Otter Love at Karanambu

Otter Love at Karanambu

Wilderness Explorers celebrated its 20th anniversary in style Friday evening at Cara Lodge in Georgetown, graced by the company of friends and partners we’ve been working with for more than two decades.

Tony Hogg writes in from Brisbane to let us know about his exceptional experience travelling across Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. A true highlight for Tony was his time at Karanambu Lodge in Guyana’s Rupununi where he and the local orphan-otter-in-residence, “Trib,” formed an unexpected bond.

Karanambu was an exceptional experience with Andrea and Salvador. I also had the privilege of meeting Diane McTurk and accompanied her several times to the river with her latest river otter waif. I was so surprised and so was she when “Trib” somehow took a liking to me and worked his way up my legs and across my stomach, put his head under my arm … and went to sleep. Diane herself took the enclosed photo, using a complicated camera she wasn’t used to. I treasure it as something very special and share the photo with you.

Otters are gregarious and social animals, but rarely do they warm up to strangers like this! Tony was fortunate, indeed, to gain the trust and companionship of this most remarkable creature of the Rupununi River.
