Itinerary
Arrival at Port Kaituma
Your journey begins where the international crisis reached its breaking point. We fly from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, the gateway to Jonestown. Stand on the very tarmac where California Congressman Leo Ryan was ambushed while attempting to escort “Jonestown defectors” back to safety. Your guide will reconstruct those final, frantic moments that signalled the end of the Jonestown experiment.
Into the Jungle: The Jonestown Settlement Site
From the town, we travel by 4WD into the dense Guyanese interior to the site of the community itself. While the jungle has reclaimed much of the structures, you will walk the perimeter of the former pavilion and living quarters. We discuss the dual nature of Jim Jones—the civil rights advocate who built a self-sustaining, multiracial community, and the paranoid leader whose “White Night” rehearsals led to the ultimate tragedy. The tour reveals a sombre story and a reconstruction of the events of November 18, 1978. Standing in the centre of the clearing that once housed the open-air Pavilion, your guide will detail the final hours of the 918 individuals who perished—the largest loss of American civilian life in a single deliberate act until September 11, 2001. The descent into violence began not at the settlement, but at the airstrip your group will visit upon arrival. As Senator Leo Ryan attempted to board his plane with a group of defectors, Jim Jones’s armed Red Brigade security force opened fire. The tour recounts the specific details of this ambush, which claimed the lives of the Senator, three journalists, and one defector, leaving Jones with the belief that his “jungle sanctuary” was no longer a secret from the U.S. government.
The White Nights
We stand where the community was called to the central Pavilion for the final time. We explore the psychological pressure used by Jones, the Revolutionary Suicide drills known as White Nights, which had been practised for months. We identify the area where a large industrial tub was filled with a mixture of purple grape Flavour Aid, cyanide, and tranquillisers. The narration respectfully honours the memory of those who were present, reflecting on the tragic sequence of events that began with the youngest members of the settlement and eventually encompassed the entire congregation.
The tour concludes with the final movements of the leadership. While 900+ people at the site died from ingestion and injection of the poison, the tour points out the specific location where Jim Jones was found. Unlike his followers, Jones died of a single gunshot wound to the head.
The Hidden Remnants and Memorial Monument
Your specialised guide will lead you to the hidden remnants of the temple, including the rusted remains of the tractor and the foundations of the warehouse, which serve as silent witnesses to the stories of daily life in the commune. We conclude our site visit with a time for quiet reflection and remembrance at the Memorial Monument, a haunting testament to the community’s distorted sense of loyalty and the tragic cost of unchecked power. Standing in this quiet space today, the silence of the jungle offers a stark contrast to the weight of history. We take time to acknowledge the humanity of the individuals who lived and died here, ensuring their story is told with the dignity and historical context it deserves.
Jonestown Perspectives: Voices from Port Kaituma
The story of Jonestown is not just an American one; it is a Guyanese one. This tour offers a unique opportunity to sit down with a local Port Kaituma elder who witnessed the arrival of the Peoples Temple in the mid-1970s and the chaotic aftermath of the departure, or a local whose father worked in the commune and witnessed the shooting that occurred at the Port Kaituma Airport. These firsthand accounts provide a chilling, grounded perspective on how the community was viewed by its neighbours.
Overnight in Port Kaituma
Our overnight stay in Port Kaituma allows your group the time to process the weight of the history. Spend the evening along the vibrant waterfront, seeing how the town has evolved from a quiet outpost to a bustling mining hub, before retiring to your hotel.
