Travel deep into Guyana’s interior by road, river and foot on this five-day overland journey to Kaieteur Falls. From Georgetown, the route passes through Linden, Mabura Hill and Mahdia before continuing by open boat along the Potaro River. The adventure includes portages at Amatuk and Waratuk Falls, a swim at Devils Falls, a hammock night at Tukiet and the demanding rainforest ascent known as “Oh My God” Mountain. After reaching the plateau, you spend two nights at Kaieteur Guest House before returning to Georgetown by scheduled flight.
This tour is designed for active, physically fit travellers who are comfortable with remote conditions, basic accommodation, open-boat travel and strenuous hiking. Unlike a standard Kaieteur Falls flight day trip, this journey allows you to experience the rainforest, Potaro River and Kaieteur Gorge before approaching the falls on foot. Extra time in Kaieteur National Park also provides opportunities to see the falls at dawn and dusk, watch the swifts return behind the waterfall and look for Giant Tank Bromeliads, the endemic Golden Frog and the Guianan Cock-of-the-rock.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Georgetown ⌄
Pickup and transfer from Cheddi Jagan International Airport to Georgetown and your selected hotel.
Rainforest Bed and Breakfast is a beautifully landscaped oasis in the city. You walk off the street into a tropical garden which feels as if you have crossed into a Balinese house. The B&B features an amazing collection of Amerindian artifacts and Guyanese art and numerous areas for relaxing, including hammocks in the garden. The four bedrooms all have an en-suite bathroom with hot water.

Day 2 – Georgetown Museums, Historic Landmarks and Botanical Gardens ⌄
During your visit to Georgetown, there are a number of interesting sites that should not be missed, such as the National Museum, which contains a broad selection of our animal life portrayed in taxidermy in beautiful old glass cases, and the Walter Roth.
Museum of Anthropology, which houses a wonderful collection of artefacts and explains the history and lifestyle of our indigenous peoples.
On this mix of vehicle and walking tour, enjoy the views of other historic buildings along this promenade such as the Public Library, City Hall, the Victoria Law Courts, St. Andrews Kirk, Stabroek Market - once described as a “bizarre bazaar, and St. George’s Cathedral, which is one of the world’s tallest free-standing wooden buildings.
We will visit the Botanical Gardens, home to an extensive collection of tropical flora, and we will also pay a visit to a pond either in the gardens or the National Park, to feed the endangered West Indian Manatees.

Demerara Historical River Tour

This afternoon we will take a drive through the heart of the city to the Stabroek Market area. Here we will join the afternoon commuters using the old ferry stelling to board the river taxis which are used to cross the Demerara River. The river taxis are a faster alternative route to using the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
We will slowly cruise along and across the Demerara River while your guide will give a brief history of the famous buildings along the waterfront. We then continue our trip to see the Demerara Harbour Bridge, once the longest floating bridge in the world at a total length of 1,851m long. We will cross under the bridge and tie up our boat near a mangrove that is the nightly roost for a variety of birds. As the sun sets over the river, we will have a cold drink and some snacks (or cutters as we call them here in Guyana) as we enjoy flocks of brilliant Scarlet Ibis, Snail Kites, Herons, and three kinds of Egrets as they fly across the sky and settle into the mangroves for the evening.
Soon after the sun sets, we return to the ferry stelling while enjoying the city and ship lights from the river.

Day 3 – Overland Journey from Georgetown to Mahdia ⌄
To beat the Georgetown traffic, we hit the road early, following the Demerara River toward the mining town of Linden. After a quick coffee break, the landscape shifts as we cross the river into the heart of the rainforest. The drive is surprisingly smooth thanks to the new tarmac, leading us to a 58-mile outpost for much needed bathroom break.
We then push through the rugged logging outpost of Mabura Hill and board a pontoon to cross the Essequibo River. Our destination is Mahdia, a high-energy gold-mining town. If the sun is still up, explore the town's unique frontier atmosphere before retreating to the simple comforts of Roger Hinds Hotel. Overnight at Roger Hinds Hotel. Breakfast included
Day 4 – Potaro River Journey to Tukiet via Amatuk and Waratuk Falls ⌄
After breakfast, we head to Pamela Landing for our first encounter with the Potaro River. Here, we board open boats and begin the journey to Amatuk Falls. At the falls, you can choose to explore the cascading waters or join the crew in the physical challenge of portaging the boats over the rapids.
Continuing upriver to Waratuk Falls, a second portage brings us deep into the towering Kaieteur Gorge, where you might catch a distant, breathtaking glimpse of Kaieteur Falls itself. We’ll break the journey with a 30-minute hike to refresh in the cool waters of Devils Falls before a final short boat ride to our camp at Tukiet. Spend the evening swimming in the river or marvelling at the enigmatic Ibini Mountains on the horizon.
Tonight’s accommodation is a true jungle experience: sleeping in hammocks at the rustic Tukiet Guesthouse.

Day 5 – Rainforest Trek from Tukiet to Kaieteur Falls ⌄
Today is yours to fully immerse yourself in the wonders of Kaieteur National Park. Perched on a sandstone plateau in Guyana’s deep interior, the Potaro River suddenly vanishes, plummeting 741 feet into a prehistoric gorge. This sheer drop is five times the height of Niagara Falls, and its raw power is felt in the very vibration of the ground beneath your feet.
The morning begins with a ritual you won't soon forget: coffee at dawn, overlooking the mist-filled abyss as the first light of day reveals the magnitude of the drop.
As you explore the area, the legends of the Patamona people bring the landscape to life. You will hear the story of Chief Kai, who sacrificed himself by paddling his canoe over the thundering brink to appease the Great Spirit, Makonaima, and save his people from warring tribes. It is a place of deep spiritual significance, where history and myth are as thick as the jungle air.
Beyond the falls, the plateau supports a rare and delicate microenvironment. Look closely at the Giant Tank Bromeliads—the largest of their kind on Earth—which serve as tiny, water-filled kingdoms for the endemic Golden Frog. If you are quiet and lucky, you may also spot the brilliant orange plumage of the Guianan Cock-of-the-rock nesting nearby, adding a flash of vivid colour to this ancient, emerald world. Day 6 – Explore Kaieteur Falls and Kaieteur National Park ⌄
Morning to explore and it is then time to depart by scheduled flight to Mahdia Airport, the official check in point (3hrs ground time), and onwards to Georgetown. You may get a final, spectacular aerial view of Kaieteur Falls and the gorge and an awe-inspiring expanse of rainforest and rivers.

Essential Information
**Your itinerary includes a US$5.00 per person voluntary guest contribution to the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana’s (THAG) Tourism Development Fund, which supports industry-wide improvements through capacity building, marketing and product development to make Guyana a world-class destination. By contributing, you directly support the people, places, and experiences that make Guyana a special place to visit. While this is included in your total, it is entirely voluntary, and you may choose to opt out.
Guyana Entry Requirements
All travellers to and from Guyana must complete the digital embarkation/disembarkation form for Immigration and Customs clearance procedures at all ports of entry. These forms, must be completed 1-2 days prior to travel and can be accessed using the following link https://ed.gpf.gov.gy/#/. Take a screenshot of the confirmation page, since it will be requested by immigration.
Please note that on the overland trip to Kaieteur Falls you carry your own backpack. Porters can be arranged to carry your pack at an additional cost of US$ 60.00 per porter per day.

Failure to provide us with this information or the incorrect information can cause delays to flights and inconvenience to other passengers and in some cases either passengers and/or luggage being taken off the flight. To ensure a holiday that is enjoyable and hassle free, it is imperative that passengers provide us with this information. We appreciate some people are sensitive about providing their body weights, but all customers and their baggage are weighed at check-in. This is procedure by the airline so as to ensure that the weight of the load is within the payload limit for the aircraft, and neither they nor Wilderness Explorers will compromise on safety. All passengers are subject to removal of themselves or luggage from the flight if over the weight they provided and/or over the baggage allowance. Passengers are advised to provide a body weight with clothing similar to that which they would expect to travel in on the flight. CONDITION RESTRAINTS: You have selected a tour that is, in part, in remote areas. This adds to the adventure and opportunity to enjoy a true nature experience. However, due to the nature of the terrain, weather, road conditions, and other elements beyond our control, some elements of tours may have to be altered. Times of some activities may need to be changed or even cancelled due to the conditions. If an activity is cancelled it will be replaced with an alternative activity that is more appropriate for the conditions. Advance notice will be given for any changes where possible, although at times changes may be made whilst the tour is in progress.
