Discover the Mahaica River Tour

A River Close to Georgetown

The Mahaica River Tour is one of Guyana’s best short escapes. Located just an hour from Georgetown, it combines rice fields, mangroves, and wetlands in one fascinating trip.

Early Morning Adventure

Your tour begins at sunrise. Small boats carry you along the winding river, where the morning light and bird calls set the scene. Rice fields soon give way to mangrove stands and freshwater marshes. These habitats create perfect conditions for wildlife watching.

Spotting Guyana’s National Bird

The highlight of the Mahaica River is the Hoatzin, Guyana’s national bird. Locals call it the “Canje Pheasant.” With its rufous crest, maroon wings, and turquoise face, it is unmistakable. Juvenile hoatzins even have claws on their wings, a rare prehistoric trait.

Birdlife Beyond the Hoatzin

This tour offers much more than one species. The Blood-coloured Woodpecker, found only in Guyana and Suriname, is often seen here. Egrets, ibises, herons, marsh tyrants, and snail kites are also regular sightings, making the river a top birding destination.

Wildlife Encounters Along the River

Beyond birds, the Mahaica River is one of the best places in Guyana to see Red Howler Monkeys. Their loud calls echo through the canopy, adding a wild soundtrack to your trip. Lucky visitors may also catch a glimpse of river otters moving quietly through the reeds.

A Blend of Nature and Culture

Your guide shares insights into the river’s ecology and its connection to local rice farming. This mix of birding, landscapes, and cultural context makes the Mahaica River Tour a well-rounded experience for visitors seeking more than a city trip.

Half Day : Itinerary

0430hrs pickup and transfer eastward from Georgetown to the Mahaica River. This is one of the best places to spot Guyana’s national bird, the hoatzin (Opisthocomus Hoatzin), also known as the Hoatzin, Stinkbird, or “Canje Pheasant”. This odd bird is an unusual species of tropical bird found in swamps, reverie forest and mangrove of the Amazon and the Orinoco delta in South America.

It is a pheasant-sized bird about 65 cm (25 in) long, with a long neck and small head. It is brown in colour, with paler under parts and has an unfeathered blue face with maroon eyes, and its head is topped by a spiky, rufous crest. The chicks are unusual in that two of their wing digits possess claws. The hoatzin is herbivorous; it eats leaves and fruit, and has an unusual digestive system with an enlarged crop which functions as a rumen. It also produces a horrible smell to scare away potential predators.

Our journey down the Mahaica River begins in the small commercial area near the main coastal road. The river bends away from the road and takes us through an area that has been largely cultivated for sugarcane and other agriculture but, fortunately for us, the area surrounding the river itself has been well preserved and provides an excellent riverfront ecosystem inhabited by flocks of egret, heron, ibis, various marsh tyrants, and of course the hoatzin.

Fantastic Service and Memorable Birding Experience

Jessica Ross was super helpful arranging and coordinating a whole week of tours for us. She was responsive, proactive and accomodating. We planned our trip really last minute and she put together a truly fantastic package for us. On the Mahaica excursion, Carlos our tour guide was wonderful, really upbeat and knowledgeable. no low points! only highlights! our driver was lovely and the boat captain helped us spot beautiful birds and river otters. superb - Jessica was a HUGE help, she made our trip so special and memorable. I would recommend Wilderness Explorers to friends and know they were in good hands booking with the company.

Just a very fun, informative, and engaging weekend

I wanted to do this tour specifically to see as many birds as possible and I think we did just that! Besides all the birds, highlights include the unexpected things I saw like the river otters and the cool roosting bats and the roti breakfast after the boat ride was fantastic!!! Everything was so smoothly organized and simple. I knew all the details well in advance and communication was next level! Jessica and others in her department were so amazing to work with! They replied quickly and with tons of information, always meeting and exceeding my needs...Wonderful tours! The 3 tours I did were all unique and interesting and as my main goal was to see birds, that was achieved but I learned so much about the people and history of the country. Just a very fun, informative, and engaging weekend spent in a place I knew very little about. I feel like I know a lot more now about the flora, fauna, and people of Guyana. Well done!
